The organization of Presbyterian Women (PW) is made up of all female members of the church. The purpose of this group is set forth in the following statement: "Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible Study, support the mission of the church worldwide work for justice and peace, and build an inclusive caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (USA) to the promise of God's Kingdom." A number of our ladies have joined one of the five "Circles". Membership in any circle is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Four of the circles meet in the morning some at church and some in the homes of its members. One circle meets in the evening. Each circle is headed by a "moderator" with a "Bible moderator" leading the monthly Bible study. Various projects are sponsored by each circle as its interest and finances dictate. All circles have college students and homebound church members who are remembered with cards and small gifts throughout the year. Several major projects are carried out each year for the benefit of church and community. In January each year, PW sponsors Blanket Sunday. Donations are solicited from the entire congregation to benefit this project. Funds are handled by the PW Treasurer. It is the responsibility of the PWCT to set the date for this event, and advertise it. During Lent the PW organizes and carries out a series of services and luncheons beginning the first Wednesday of Lent (Ash Wednesday) and continuing for the six weeks of this Holy season. It is customary for the senior pastor, having consulted with the PW Moderator, to invite the guest ministers for this Lenten Series. It is the responsibility of the PW Moderator to secure hostesses to prepare the luncheons. It is up to the Coordinating Team of PW to set the price to be charged for these luncheons. It is not the purpose of these luncheons to be a money-making project; however, if any profits are made, those funds remain part of the PW treasury and are usually used to help maintain the kitchen. During Advent, the PW sponsors the collection of food at the church's annual Joy Gift/White Gift Service. The women are actually responsible for only the "White Gift" part of this service. Canned foods as well as monetary donations are received. Food baskets are prepared for indigent families, and fruit trays are sent to many church members as a Christmas remembrance from their church family. The Service Chairman of the PWCT heads up the preparation and distribution of these items with assistance and donations coming from the entire congregation. The PW celebrates the birthday of its organization each May, and invites women from all the churches in our area (Area V) to join us in this happy event. An offering is collected with monies again sent to the designated national causes by the PW Treasurer. It is the responsibility of the PWCT to plan and carry out this event. A Thank offering is also collected from the circles and anyone else wishing to give, in the autumn. Again, the monies benefit the designated national causes and are handled by the PW Treasurer. It is also the responsibility of the PWCT to plan and carry out this event. A variety of Mission causes are sponsored by the PW throughout the year. Collection boxes, baskets and lists of needed items for these causes can be found in the back hallway of the Sunday School wing are posted on the PW bulletin board. It is the responsibility of the Mission Chairman of the PWCT, with the help and support of the PWCT, to maintain these collections and see that they are distributed in a timely manner. |
